Ultra-high-net-worth
A label banks and wealth researchers give the wealthiest individuals and families, above a net-worth threshold they set themselves; it is not defined in law.
Created: 2026-10-04
Ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) describes individuals and families at the top of the wealth scale, above a net-worth threshold set by wealth researchers and banks, commonly expressed in tens of millions of US dollars. It is a label, not a legal status: no regulator defines it, and different reports draw the line in different places. A person in the band is often called a UHNWI, an ultra-high-net-worth individual.
How the label is used
Banks and wealth managers use net-worth bands to segment clients. Each band brings a different service model: a dedicated private banker, access to private markets, an in-house family office desk, different pricing. Research firms use the same bands to count and track wealthy populations across countries. Thresholds usually count net worth rather than income, and many reports exclude or discount the main residence, but the method varies by source, so two reports can classify the same family differently.
What is the difference between high net worth and ultra-high-net-worth?
Both are net-worth bands used by banks and wealth researchers, not legal categories. High net worth is the lower band, usually measured in investable assets. Ultra-high-net-worth is the top band, starting in the tens of millions of US dollars. The exact thresholds depend on the report or bank applying them.
Complexity matters more than the label
What the label does not tell you is what the family needs. The bank uses it to decide which service tier you get. Your actual problems come from complexity: the number of banks, entities, jurisdictions and family members with a stake. Those usually arrive well before a family crosses any UHNW line. A founder after a sale, or a family with a holding company and accounts in several countries, can need family-office-grade coordination while still counting as merely “high net worth” to the bank.
That band, complex before UHNW, is where PWA works. PWA designs and runs the operating layer around private wealth, an approach set out in private wealth advisory explained, with investment oversight through investment and wealth architecture. Once a family is clearly UHNW, a dedicated single-family office becomes a realistic option. Before that, the functions of a family office matter more than the structure.
If your bank has moved you into a new tier and you are unsure what changed, a written second opinion can tell you whether the new service fits the structure you actually have.
This entry is part of PWA’s plain-language glossary of terms used in modern family office architecture.
